Recycling collections at blocks of flats

Recycling collections at blocks of flats

Recycling at your block of flats is set to become even easier!

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has launched a brand new scheme to make recycling much easier for residents who live in flats.

If you live on an estate or in a large block of flats you will probably already have access to a communal Smart Bank for your recycling.

Thanks to a £222,000 grant from the London Waste and Recycling Board we have made the following improvements:

Increased the coverage of Smart Banks on estates where coverage of containers was limited.

Converted refuse chutes  - where two refuse chutes operate in parallel or very close to each other, one has been converted to a recycling chute – this approach trebled recycling rates on one estate in Westminster.

» Recycling chute and reusable bag

Installed recycling banks on each floor – where space was available and there was a suitable location, mini banks on each floor have improved the convenience of recycling.

» Recycling mini bank and reusable bag

All blocks of flats with a Smart Bank have been provided with a reusable bag – to ease the storage/transport of recycling in flats.

Last year, Hammersmith & Fulham Council saved £500,000 by recycling waste that would otherwise have been sent for expensive incineration.

Recycling has never been so important to the council, since the cost of disposing of rubbish rose by 20 per cent. It now costs £128 to dispose of a tonne of waste, compared to just £73 a tonne for recycling.

The council is making huge savings across the board as we look to respond to the national debt crisis and the more residents recycle, the more funds the council can direct towards the services that matter most to residents.

We would like to thank you for your efforts and ask you to keep up the good work. By using the improved recycling service, residents in flats could play their part in helping to recycle an extra 4,400 tonnes over the next four years - that is the equivalent weight of 590 London Buses!

Composting in flats

Home composting is an excellent way to reduce the amount of food waste that is sent for expensive incineration. This year, you can help us save approximately £127 for every tonne of food waste diverted from incineration.

Wormeries are ideal for flats with a balcony or ground floor garden and will provide you with a free supply of compost and liquid fertilizer that is great for potted plants and window boxes. Subsidised womreries (from £53)  can be ordered on-line. For full details of the offers or to place an order, visit the Get Composting website (opens in new window).

Delivery is charged at £5.49 per order. Please allow up to 28 days for delivery. Please contact Evengreener, our provider, on 0845 130 60 90 if you have not received your order within one month from the point of order.
