Battery recycling

Bring your batteries to be recycled at one of the libraries or council offices

Did you know? Batteries contain various hazardous materials - such as lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, manganese and lithium. Around 600 million UK household batteries (22,000 tonnes) – the equivalent weight of 110 Jumbo Jets – are disposed of unnecessarily every year.

You can recycle your used batteries in the pink collection tubes at the following libraries:

Collection tubes are also located at the following council offices:

  • Fulham North Area Housing Office, Clem Attlee Estate, SW6 7RX
  • Fulham South Area Housing Office, Fulham Town Hall, Fulham Road, SW6 1ET
  • 77 Glenthorne Road, W6 0LJ
  • Hammersmith Information Centre, 20 Broadway Shopping Centre, W6 9YD
  • Hammersmith North Area Housing Office, New Zealand Way, Zealand Way, W12 7DE
  • Hammersmith Town Hall Reception, King Street, W6 9JU

The battery recycling tubes accepts:

  • single use batteries - dry cell batteries, button batteries (watch and calculator batteries) and domestic household batteries
  • rechargeable batteries - Nickel cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and lithium batteries.

Sorry, we are unable to accept any Lead Acid Batteries – car and computer back-up batteries, as part of this scheme. These batteries can be recycled at one of the Reuse and Recycling Centres. Visit the Recycle Western Riverside website (opens in new window) for address details and opening times.

Large retailers, who sell batteries, often provide collection facilities at their stores. Look out for collection points at your local supermarket.

Try to reduce your use of batteries by using mains electricity where possible. There is also a good selection of wind up radios and torches on the market. Use rechargeable batteries wherever possible. Even better look out for solar battery chargers.
