Pollution control - noise and nuisance

Environmental enforcement & protection deal with  a wide range of noise and nuisance problems including:

• Barking dogs
• Bonfires

• Domestic noise such as DIY work and barking dogs

• Intruder alarms
• Loud music/parties
• Noise from commercial premises

Unfortunately we have no power to deal with: -

• Aircraft noise
• Children playing or being ‘rowdy’
• Complaints where the noise is only a problem to the complainant because they are ‘sensitive due to personal/ medical reasons
• General ‘domestic noise’, unless at a reasonable time
• Problems caused by inadequate sound insulation in residential areas Rowdy behaviour in public places
• Shouting/ fighting emanating from a premises
• Some noise caused by ‘statutory undertakers’ e.g. road works due to gas/ electric/ water or works to the railway at night.
• Traffic Noise                 

What you can do to help

Many people do not realise that their actions are causing their neighbours a problem. If you can approach safely, the best way to deal with the problem is to go to the source – it is best to do this after the event. Talk to the person or company responsible and explain the problem. You may find that you can resolve the problem amicably without any further action
