Our conclusion on Stage 1 of the Air Quality Review

Conclusions of review

Based on the available information, and with due regard to all current guidance, it appears that airborne concentrations of the following pollutants either already fall within the set standard to be achieved by 2005, or are at such a level that with future predicted reductions, will fall below the standards by 2005:

  • Benzene*
  • 1,3-Butadiene
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Lead

(* If standard remains at 5 ppb. If it is reduced to 1 ppb as an annual mean further assessment will be required).

Given the available information and with regard to current guidance it is believed that the following pollutants will not fall below the standards in the National Air Quality Strategy in some areas of the borough.

  • Sulphur Dioxide
  • Particulates (PM10)
  • Nitrogen Dioxide

Therefore it is recommended to proceed to a stage 2 assessment for these pollutants to identify those areas within Hammersmith & Fulham where levels will be such, that in 2005 the standards laid out in the strategy will be exceeded.

Following completion of the two final stages of the review and assessment of air quality, the council intends to produce a further consultation document. This will be sent to consultees when it is finalised.
