What is 'sustainable development'?
There are too many definitions of sustainable development! Let's go with just one - the most common is 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.
To achieve this, in 1999 the government defined four key objcetives for the UK's strategy for sustainable development (you can view this at www.sustainable-development.gov.uk - opens new window).
- Social Progress which recognises the needs of everyone
- Effective protection of the environment
- Prudent use of natural resources
- Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment
How did we get where we are today?
It all started in 1992 at the 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro. 180 countries agreed to produce international, national and local plans to help achieve sustainable development. The international plan is called 'Agenda 21'; the national plan 'A Better Quality of Life' and the local plan 'Local Agenda 21'.
Hammersmith & Fulham's Local Agenda 21 plan was completed in January 2000 - it forms part of the council's Community Strategy 'Your Borough Your Future' which can be viewed in our Community Strategy.
What is happening now?
In 2002, another international summit was held in Johannesburg. The Government will shortly be launching a public debate on a new national sustainable development plan.
