If your planning application is refused, you are not satisfied with the conditions of your planning permission or you have not received a decision within the statutory deadline, you can appeal to the Planning Inspectorate, which is part of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The appeal will be considered by a planning inspector who has been appointed by the Secretary of State. While most appeals are handled in writing, some are decided by a hearing before an inspector and some are decided after a public inquiry.

Please note, there is no right of appeal for ‘third parties’ (such as neighbouring occupiers).

Click here to visit the Planning Inspectorate website where you can check the progress of a current planning appeal, view and comment on an appeal, or browse past records. To search the database you will need the last part of the Inspectorate Reference number, which can be found on our Planning Applications Search page.
