Lightwells

Lightwells are built next to buildings to allow light into rooms that are below street level.

Please note that although some lightwell retaining walls are part of the public highway, the council is not responsible for their construction or maintenance. If you want to build a lightwell and its retaining wall on your property you need planning permission.
