Environmental Protection Team
Environmental Protection is responsible for enforcement and regulation in the following areas:
- Food Safety
- Health and safety
- Licensing
- Pollution control (including noise, clean air, accumulations, nuisance and permitting regulations)
- Pest control
- Contaminated land
- Private water supplies
- Trading standards
Much of the work of the division is determined by statute and the Public Protetion and Safety Enforcement Policy lays down how legislation is interpreted and enforced.
There are approximately 6500 commercial premises, including 1500 food businesses, which are risk-related and inspected on a programmed basis by specialist officers. In addition to this proactive work the division responds to requests for service and has set itself standards for action.
Public Protection and Safety Quality Policy
The Public Protection & Safety division of this borough provides a range of services relating to consumer protection and environmental health matters, including inspection of premises, investigation of complaints, registration of premises, persons and processes, provision of advice and information and the provision of a pest control service.
Many of the services provided are statutory in nature. The Council is required to carry out inspections of premises for Food Safety and Health and Safety at work requirements; to implement a range of licensing / authorisation functions; to investigate complaints of statutory nuisance and to enforce legislation relating to public health and unauthorised waste disposal.
