The Sensory and Language Impairment Team
The Sensory and Language Impairment Team (SLIT) provides specialist services to children and young people 0-19 with a hearing, visual, language and multi-sensory impairment as well as preschool complex needs and significant developmental delay.
SLIT is comprised of specialist teachers, early year’s educators and specialist media resource and mobility officers.
Delivery has a strong emphasis on early identification, specialist intervention and parental support. The services core focus is upon inclusive excellence for a discrete group of children and young people with specific specialist learning needs.
Babies are referred to the team by health professionals upon identification sometimes shortly after birth and support is sensitively offered both in the child’s home early year’s settings and educational placements. Early developmental activities are planned in partnership with parents and the frequency of visits agreed. Portage delivers weekly home visits to families of young pre-school children with severe and complex needs focussing upon agreed small achievable targets.
Peripatetic Teachers support schools with advice assessment and individual programme planning. They provide individual teaching support and modelling of support strategies. Flexible INSET is offered as required by schools health professionals and other agencies. Specialist equipment and technical aids are offered to support inclusion. The Media Resource Department also modifies curricular materials (including into Braille) to ensure access for pupils with a visual impairment and the mobility officer supports developing independent travel and movement around home school and within the community.
There is a wide range of local parent and voluntary agency support groups available. These include the Little Crickets mother and toddler group for parents of hearing impaired children, and London South and West Deaf Children's Society.
