The primary inclusion development service

The primary inclusion development service is a new service, based on the Langford site but part of school improvement and standards.

Its purpose is to support primary schools in developing their own capacity to respond more effectively to the needs of primary aged children with behaviour, social and emotional difficulties, and, most importantly, to help ensure learning within a mainstream setting wherever possible.

The service includes the primary pupil referral unit, for pupils at risk of exclusion or who have been excluded, and two further two teams: the extended primary pupil referral unit team, which supports effective integration in school, and the inclusion development team, which concentrates on whole school development.  Each team comprises both teacher consultants and development workers who are experienced in working with schools, staff, pupils and families in the field of emotional and social difficulties at primary level.   Each member of the teams also has a particular area of responsibility or expertise, but team members work together as needed to help schools resolve issues in the most effective way.

The primary inclusion development service has a strong focus on the training of teachers in developing their knowledge, understanding and skills regarding pupils with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties.  Feedback from heads, teachers and school staff who have worked with the teams so far has been very positive.
