Overview
Fulham Cross Girls’ School is the only community girls’ school in Hammersmith & Fulham, consulting on moving to Trust Status at present. Fulham Cross is a specialist language college, committed to celebrating internationalism, promoting language learning and supporting students to become self-aware and confident global citizens. Language learning opportunities for students and the local community will be further developed within our new Language Learning Centre, a self-contained centre within Fulham Cross grounds. The school provides outstanding education for students of all abilities, as judged by Ofsted, September 2009.
Fulham Cross Girls’ School and Henry Compton federated in September 2009; Mrs Bernie Peploe took up the post of Executive Principal in September 2010. Both schools remain as separate institutions and will continue to offer single sex education for 11 to 16 year old students. A joint sixth form is scheduled for 2013.
Our students come from many ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds and we aim to empower all girls to take full advantage of the educational opportunities we offer.
The school’s examination results have improved impressively in recent years and are on target to improve still further. Fulham Cross Girls’ School was one of the biggest improvers in 2009, with 83.3 per cent of pupils overall achieving five or more A*-C grades and 70.4 per cent achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths – up 22.4 per cent on the previous year. Our Ofsted inspections have noted the very good progress made, the high quality of teaching in many areas and the excellent support for individual students.
The school’s ethos is to make a positive difference to students through:
- a balanced curriculum up to GCSE level, including vocational courses
- support for all students’ learning, from girls of high ability to those in need of extra help
- a varied programme of out-of-school classes and activities
- paying a great deal of attention to individual students through good pastoral care and a personal and social programme for all girls. We are working to develop citizenship activities through community projects and regular health and well-being sessions
- an excellent careers programme, including mock interviews with employers and work experience placements
- school trips, including visits to other European countries, and outdoor activities weeks. Individual field trips support particular subjects.
Our facilities include two computer network areas and computers in many classrooms. A large number of laptops are used widely across a range of subjects. We have a flexible learning area, equipped with video, CD-ROM and computer facilities for individual study. Girls are encouraged to take part in the arts and the school has its own drama studio and music suite.
Fulham Cross Girls' School is targeting ‘gifted and talented’ students, and those who are underachieving through extra activities and increased support for students and families for whom English is an additional language. These are supported by an Education Action Zone, in which Fulham Cross is the lead school with Melcombe, Sir John Lillie and Fulham primary schools, as well as Henry Compton School as our partners.
The school celebrates achievement and attainment at every age and level. Regular commendations and certificates of merit are awarded to pupils, while parents and carers are invited to attend the school’s annual Celebration of Achievement.
There is an active school council, which gives girls the opportunity to contribute to the organisation and management of the school. In year 11 the school elects prefects who are expected to make a positive contribution to school events and the smooth organisation of the school day.
Parents and carers play a vital role in what is achieved and they are expected to support the school by ensuring that:
- the basic expectations of the school, including the wearing of school uniform, are met by all the girls
- girls attend regularly and are not taken on holiday during term time
- homework is completed and the students’ journals are checked and signed weekly
- if there are concerns, stemming from either outside or inside the school, contact is made immediately so that these concerns can be resolved
- they attend parents’ evenings and the annual progress review day. At these meetings it is made clear to families what is required for students to make further progress, and how parents or carers can support them.
Admissions
The decision to admit children to this school is made by Hammersmith & Fulham Council in accordance with its admissions policy for the school. For September 2012 places will be allocated to those children whose parents or carers have expressed a preference for this school.
Any child with a Statement of Special Educational Need that names this school must, by law, be admitted, without reference to the oversubscription criteria.
Admissions criteria
In accordance with the school’s published admission number, the school will admit 125 pupils in September 2012.
If there are more preferences expressed than places available, priority will be given in accordance with the published oversubscription criteria in the following order:
- Children in public care (those looked after by a local authority under section 22 of the Children Act 1998).
- Children defined as being in priority need within the categories of need defined by the Children Act 1989 or as having an otherwise professionally supported exceptional education, medical or social need for a particular school. (*see note 1)
- Children who have a sister already in the school and who would be in the school in September 2012 (*see note 2). A brother who is already attending the federated Henry Compton School and who would be at that school in September 2012 also counts as a sibling link for Fulham Cross Girls’ School. If there are more children with siblings in the school than places available, places will be allocated to those children with siblings who live nearest to the school in terms of walking distance. (*see note 3)
- Children who live nearest to the school in terms of walking distance. (*see note 3)
Notes:
- If you think your child has an exceptional educational, social or medical need for this
particular school, your case must be supported by documented evidence from a doctor, health visitor, social worker or other medical professional, which must be submitted at the time of your original application. You will need to show why your preferred school is the only school that meets your child’s social or medical need. The decision as to whether your child qualifies on medical or social grounds is made by the local authority. - Sibling refers to sister, half sister, adopted sister, step sister, or the daughter of the parent/carer’s partner where the child for whom the school place is sought is living in the same family unit at the same address as that sibling.
- Distance will be measured by the shortest walking route, via public rights of way, from the ‘seed point’ (a central point) of the child’s home address (including flats) to the main entrance of the school, using the Local Authority’s computerised measuring system, with those living closer to the school receiving the higher priority.
Appeal arrangements
If you are refused a place at this school, you have the right in law to appeal against the decision to an independent panel. Parents should contact the school admissions section for more information on the appeal arrangements.
