Overview
Burlington Danes Academy is a Church of England Academy for boys and girls aged 11-18. The Academy has specialist status in maths and the performing arts. The Academy is sponsored by the educational charity ARK and is proud to serve a vibrant and culturally diverse community with an emphasis on academic excellence in all subjects.
The Academy was recognised as a ‘good’ school in our most recent (January 2009) OfSTED inspection and we are getting even better. This is an exciting time to be part of Burlington Danes. OfSTED inspectors commented that a “huge improvement has taken place over the last year”. The report also highlights the “ambitious vision for the academy that is shared among staff”, and concludes that “the improvements achieved and the energetic determination of staff indicate that the academy has good capacity for further improvement.”
Staff are totally committed to ensuring that by our next inspection the academy will move to an outstanding grade. Our aim is to make Burlington Danes London’s best academy. This means thoroughly planned, exciting and creative lessons, challenging work, independent learning and a rigorous assessment system every six weeks. All classes are grouped by ability. Expectations are high: of work, of appearance, of personal organisation. Students who are underachieving are targeted and intervention programmes instigated to support progress more effectively. Achievement is a passion of every teacher.
We work closely with parents and carers to ensure that all students do their best and achieve at least their target grades. Parents are our partners and their support is essential to guarantee that students meet their potential. Our Parent Teacher Association provides an additional forum for parents to support the academy. We are deeply proud to be a Church of England academy and students learn within a Christian ethos which values all students regardless of faith. Every child matters to us. We emphasise the importance of spirituality and morality within the school curriculum. Curriculum opportunities are further enriched by a full and vibrant extended day curriculum, excursions, residential trips and visits.
Students complete daily homework tasks monitored by advisors and parents through the student planner. We run a wide range of homework clubs, study and revision programmes but we also expect our students to play a full part in extending and monitoring their own work. The student’s voice is now a key aspect of academy life, whether it is through a small school or whole academy council, our ambassador system, or the focus groups we hold to discuss the quality and nature of their education.
We are a specialist mathematics and performing arts college and enjoy stunning facilities: The Stanley Fink Building is a state-of-the-art, brand new maths, English and science building and a performing arts centre, with a 300 seat theatre, sixth form area and a digital music centre will open in January 2010. Both these new facilities complement our beautiful Burlington Building – nationally renowned as a fine example of art deco architecture – and together with extensive fields and hard play areas they comprise, in our view, one of the best school sites in London.
At Burlington Danes we believe that every student has the right to learn in a safe, secure and joyful community founded on mutual respect and care for one another. We are driven by success and do not accept excuses for underachievement. Be assured that the happiness and achievement of all students at Burlington Danes is our number one priority.
Admissions
The decision to admit students to the Academy is taken by the Academy’s governing body, in accordance with their admissions policy. All applicants must complete and return by the closing date the common application form provided by their own local authority.
All applicants are urged to obtain a full copy of the Academy’s admissions policy prior to completing an application form. This is available from the Academy or at www.arkonline.org
Any child with a Statement of Special Educational Need that names the Academy must, by law, be admitted, without reference to the oversubscription criteria.
Summarised admissions criteria
In accordance with its published admission number, the Academy will admit 180 pupils in September 2012. Where the number of applications for admissions is greater than the published admissions number, applications will be considered against the Governors’ published admissions criteria in the following order:
- Children in public care (looked-after children).
- Children who have a sibling (see note 1*) who already attends the Academy and who will continue to do so on the date of admission.
- After the application of (a) and (b) above, up to 25% of remaining places will be allocated to children who attend Church of England primary schools and priority will be given to those who live closest to the Academy (see note 2*).
- After the application of paragraph (c) above, the remaining admissions will be allocated to children regardless of which school they attend and where there are more applications than places, to those children who live closest to the Academy, using a straight line distance measurement from the main entrance of the Academy to the child’s home.
* Note 1: siblings refers to all blood, half, step, adoptive and foster brothers and sisters who live at the same home address.
**Note 2: Distance is calculated using a computerised geographic information system.
Appeal arrangements
If you are refused a place at the Academy, you have the right in law to appeal against the Governors’ decision to an independent panel. Parents should contact the Academy directly for information on the appeal arrangements.
Preference information
628 parents ranked the Academy as one of their preferences for the September 2011 intake; 180 places were available.
