Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service

This service provides three-fold support in schools and early years centres to raise levels of achievement for minority ethnic pupils.

•  The Service offers advice and support to specialist teachers who work with pupils learning English as an additional language (EAL). These specialists collaborate closely with class/ subject teachers to support and access pupils to the National Curriculum. The quality of provision and the progress of identified pupils are monitored annually by advisory teachers.

•  The service also supports raising the achievement of Black pupils in primary and secondary schools who are at risk of under achieving. Schools are encouraged to develop initiatives and strategies to overcome barriers to learning. The work is monitored annually by advisory teachers.

•  The Traveller Education team works in schools to raise the achievement of Travellers and Gypsy Roma pupils. The team also offers advice and pastoral support to pupils and their families in all matters concerning access and admission to schools, transfer from primary to secondary schools, attendance, and support at school meetings, translation and interpretation. The team works closely with other agencies to ensure our pupils gain equal access to their legal entitlement to education.

Over and above the support to schools, the Service provides a central programme of in-service training and a small resource base to which all teachers in schools can have access.
