Educating your child at home

The law (Education Act 1996) says that all children of statutory school age (5 to 16+) must be in receipt of 'efficient full time education suitable to their age aptitude and ability'. Most parents/carers chose to send their children to school but a small proportion choose to organise to educate their child/ren outside of school, usually at home.

In this borough, the Education Welfare Advisory Service is responsible for ensuring that all home educated children are properly supported and that the education being provided is suitable. However, although a School Improvement Adviser will arrange to talk with parents/carers and pupils about the provision and will be interested to see examples of what the pupil is learning, the Local Education Authority will not provide tutors, ICT support or learning materials.
