Population Estimates and Population Projections

Mid Year Population Estimates.

The Mid Year Estimates are produced annually by the Office for National Statistics and provide official updates to the estimates of population in the Borough to single years of age and by gender. The latest year for which this data is available is 2006.

The Mid Year Estimate for 2006 was published by ONS in August 2007 along with revisions to the estimates for 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the Mid Year Estimate for 2007 was published by ONS in August 2008:

The 2001 MYE differs from the 2001 Census total population figure for the Borough of 165,242 because of various adjustments made by ONS, in common with all other local authorities.

The moderate estimated increase over the 2001-6 period ranks only 21st among the London Boroughs. In the longer term the GLA projections (2006 Round, Low Projection), which will be revised in the light of the most recent Mid Year Estimates suggest an increase in the Borough's population of 4.7% between 2006 and 20016 which is lower than the 6.4% projected for Gtreater London as a whole.

It should be noted that MYE data can only be published rounded to the nearest hundred and the source must be acknowledged. Single years of age data is less reliable than age groups and data should be aggregated for presentation purposes to at least 5 year age groups.
