Shared Future
Shared Future
Hammersmith and Fulham Council is currently in the process of setting up a partnership group to examine and drive community cohesion activities at all levels in the borough. The aims, objectives and activities of the group would be aligned with the emerging ‘Shared Future’ agenda.
Background
The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is a diverse borough with people from many different backgrounds, ethnicities and faiths. The diversity is both one of our strengths and one of our challenges. A shared future is the responsibility of all sections of our society and is therefore a cross cutting theme of the Community Strategy.
Shared Future describes the ability of communities to function and grow in harmony together rather than in conflict. It has strong linkages to equality and diversity since community cohesion is strengthened when society as a whole recognises that individuals have the right to equality and respect, and appreciate the diverse nature of communities. The Council and partners need to work together to ensure that:
- There is a common vision, and sense of belonging in the borough
- The diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and positively valued
- People from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities
- There are strong and positive relationships being developed between people from different backgrounds and circumstances in the workplace, in schools and in neighbourhoods.
Aims of the Group
The group will need to propose and implement activities fro the Borough that aim:
- To listen to all residents and communities across the district
- To build strong leadership for our shared future
- To build connections and support integration between people
- To ensure funding processes are transparent and fair
- To require that services, policies and practice help to build a shared future for the Borough
- To challenge inappropriate behaviour
- To help communities deal with community tensions appropriately
- To enable all young people to contribute to our shared future.
Objectives of the Group
The main objectives of the Shared Future group will be:
- To advise the Council and partners on matters of social and shared future and integration
- To develop projects and activities that support integration and the shared future initiative
- To develop the ‘shared future’ agenda further to benefit the Council
- To develop, steer and coordinate the Borough’s faith and cultural events and festivals
- To monitor performance and progress against community cohesion and integration.
