Street wardens - further information
Further information about the work done by the Shepherds Bush Street Wardens
What else do the street wardens do?
Joint patrols are carried out with outreach workers from the Broadway Project to locate and identify street drinkers and homeless people, providing information on, and directing them to, services that are available within the borough.
The Street Wardens have carried out a street drinking audit on behalf of the alcohol strategy co-ordinator of the community safety unit; have taken part in the various safer drinking campaigns; and they have visited licensed retail outlets with a Trading Standards Officer to give retailers advice on restrictions on selling alcohol to underage persons.
The street wardens have also been involved in various crime prevention initiatives:
- Quality Street campaign – a Metropolitan Police Service led multi-agency initiative aimed at street crime and anti-social behaviour
- Safer Streets campaign – crime prevention information was provided to the public in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service
- Targeting commuters outside underground stations, to give them advice on safe use of mobile phones in public areas. Mobile phone theft is one of the most prevalent types of street crime in the area.
- Mobile phone marking
- Neighbourhood Watch
Helping people of all ages:
The street wardens engage with young people to divert them away from anti-social behaviour and into constructive activities.
The street wardens have:
- Organised five-a-side football matches
- Run a football training programme at Ravenscourt Park on the newly refurbished pitch
- Held musical events at Bush Hall in partnership with the Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) for young musicians in the area
- Joined forces with Connexions, Positive Futures and the Op*Shop to provide information on education, training and employment opportunities
The street wardens visit senior citizens, listen to their needs, provide reassurance, and act as a link to other service providers.
The street wardens drop into the Senior Citizens’ Arts and Luncheon Club on Godolphin Road when on patrol and each year serve Christmas dinner at their party.
Street warden successes:
- The scheme received the “Warden Quality Standard” Award from the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The award is in recognition of the efforts of the wardens to provide a quality service to the community.
- Since the launch of the street warden scheme there has been decreases in the number of abandoned vehicles in the area and the number of discarded syringes.
