Access for disabled visitors to Hammersmith Town Hall
Getting around
Within Hammersmith town hall we as a Council are committed to ensure that wherever possible all users of the building have suitable access within our premises and facilities to ensure that your visit is a pleasant experience.
Despite the limitations imposed by its listed building status we strive to ensure your access by providing a good service and information according to your needs. Our inclusive approach enables you to gain the same level of access as everyone else when visiting our premises. If we cannot provide exactly what you require we will endeavour to offer an alternative solution.
Within the town hall we aim to provide a better level of service for a customer with a disability. On arrival if you speak to the receptionist he/she will advise you of the following: wheelchair accessible toilets, meeting rooms, location of lifts, fire exits, drinking water facilities, large button telephones, hearing loops, platform lift for wheelchair users, wheelchair lift to stage, deaf alerter system, braille documents available and advise you on other facilities which you may require.
Leaflets on access are available at the main reception, please ask at the desk if you require a copy in braille or larger print.
Security
The receptionist will issue a CARDAX badge which will give you access within the town hall. This card is placed against a reader beside each door to allow access. To exit press the green button at each side of the doors.
Wheelchair users
Wheelchair users can use the lift (reception staff will give directions or walk the access route with you if necessary) to take you to the floor required. If you are using committee rooms 2, 3 or 4 (situated at the top of some stairs) on the second floor, a platform lift is available for use with assistance from the receptionist or other trained person available. There is also a platform lift to the stage in the assembly hall. Both keys are available from reception.
Wheelchair accessible toilets
- One toilet is in the main reception to the left of the reception desk, this is a unisex toilet
- 1st floor for ladies – outside the assembly hall exit 7
- 3rd floor is unisex – east wing exit 7
There are showers available for use on the ground floor within the ladies and gents toilets. The key for these are available from the reception desk.
Deaf or hearing impaired customers
Hearing loops are available within all of the meeting rooms. Your meeting organiser should ensure that these facilities are set out for you in advance. A deaf alerter system operates with the town hall. The receptionist will offer you a pager to ensure that in the event of the fire alarm being activated you will be alerted by the vibration of the pager. The pager will also display a message.
Sign language facilities are also available. The receptionist will advise you of this service.
Visual impairments
Large button telephones are situated in the main reception and within meeting rooms for anyone with visual impairment. These telephones enable you to dial internal numbers and our contact centre.
Interactive whiteboards are useful when booking a meeting room and enables the user of a meeting room to adjust the size of the font to make it more easily visible.
Emergency procedures
In the event of a fire alarm being activated a wheelchair user or anyone with limited mobility will be evacuated by trained personnel. There are two evac chairs within the town hall.
- One situated on the first floor exit 1 (outside the lift)
- One situated on the third floor exit 1 (outside the lift)
