Commercial recycling and the environment

Our existing customers can look forward to improvements in the trade waste service. Currently the commercial waste team is promoting a recently introduced offer of at least a 25% reduction in the existing price of recycling collections. On behalf of the Environment Agency, (the Central Government Executive Agency responsible for safe guarding and regulating activities in connection with all aspects of the environment in which we live), we would like to thank existing customers who have opted to recycle, as this diverts waste from going into landfill sites thereby reducing omission of harmful greenhouse gases.

Other waste

There are several categories of waste. However all types of waste need to be stored in appropriate containers and collected safely. All businesses must have a Duty of Care Document relating to the commercial waste and /or recycling they produce in order to show that they are aware of their responsibility for the storage, transfer and disposal of their waste and that a formal audit trail exists. Site assessment requests

Commercial container collections are available seven days a week for waste and six days for recycling. All wheeled council containers are clearly labelled with our signage and should be stored within the curtilage of the customer's property for collection. Full access including a dropped kerb for larger bins, where appropriate, is required to enable the councils contractor to empty the containers in accordance with the contract agreed and signed by the customer. If you would like to enquire about taking out a container based contract, please contact the cleaner greener hotline and request a visit from our commercial waste officer. Alternatively email commercialwaste@lbhf.gov.uk including the subject heading 'Site Assessment Requests' and your business contact details.

Collection times and days

Commercial container collections are available seven days a week for waste and six days for recycling. Help us by correctly presenting and placing out your commercial waste and recycling at the agreed times and at the collection points specified in your agreement, the council can only collect cardboard as recycling if it is correctly presented. The correct way of presenting cardboard for recycling is in small tied bundles of flattened cardboard pieces with one business recycling bag attached to each bundle.

Payments

There are a range of new and simple ways that our customers can pay.

Monthly direct debit instalments. To request a direct debit form to be sent to you contact commercialwaste@lbhf.gov.uk or call the trade team on 020 8753 3021.

Pay online - go to online payments and choose 'Other council invoices' from the list. You will need your TR account reference and your invoice number to make a payment online.

Disruption to normal service

If your collection has not been collected as normal please call us on the cleaner greener hotline on 020 8753 1100 to report it.  Our call centre staff will record details of any complaints and enquiries, passing these on to our contractors for action.  When calling please include as much information as you can to assist commercial waste team in establishing the reason for your collection not occurring as scheduled.

Please note however that the normal collection schedule remains unchanged on all bank holidays except during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, when collection days will change. Information about each year's Christmas and New Year collection arrangements will be provided in the council's own free newspaper, h&f news, in local newspapers, on council notice boards and on our web pages.

Revising or changing your commercial waste agreement

Most customers have already told us that their waste and recycling collection requirements may alter from time to time, owing to changing trading conditions etc. Because waste fluctuates, we offer a flexible service that allows customers to increase or decrease their collection service every three months. This helps to lower your costs and provides our contractors with the right information for ensuring that all waste and recycling is collected on schedule. To revise your contract up or down please call the trade waste team on 020 8753 3021 or email commercialwaste@lbhf.gov.uk and request that a commercial waste officer visits in order to advise on your waste output and collection requirements.

Special collections

If you have a special event or decide to have an office clear out, you may find that you have extra waste for one or two weeks only. The council offers a pre booked special or bulky commercial waste service, catering for all requirements that is flexible and is competitive in price. Please call our cleaner greener hotline and ask to book a special refuse and recycling collection.

Waste that is not collected by an authorised collection company or disposed of at a waste transfer station and that is placed out onto the public highway may cause an obstruction and have to be removed under clear all. Bulky waste items

You can recycle many office items like furniture or arrange for a specialist recycling contractor to take bulked quantities of recycling such as quality papers. For information about other service providers and charitable organizations that could assist you in diverting waste from landfill or help in a charity to raise money contact the cleaner greener hotline.

Collection issues

If a long term interruption to your normal collection service in likely (perhaps owing to road works or construction activities that prevent access to your normal collection presentation point) the commercial waste team will investigate the problem and either temporarily suspend collections where it is unsafe for them to continue, or where possible, arrange an alternative collection point. No payments are made by way of compensation for non collection; however we are committed to resolving collection issues and are committed together with our contractors to identifying any problems and implementing the appropriate remedial action.

Contract of agreement

All of our customers have, under their duty of care document as a registered business, taken out a contact of agreement. The agreement for the removal of waste and recycling outlines the council's commitment to ensure the services provided and the business customer's commitment to storing and presenting their waste for collection.

There is a minimum of a three month termination period on all contracts you will need to request in writing and provide your account details and contact information.

Illegally dumped and fly tipped waste

Our contractors, working in partnership with the council, operate a "Clear All" approach to waste left out on public streets, twenty four hours a day specifically to keep the local environment clear of unsightly and potentially dangerous uncollected waste. However our enforcement team and street monitoring officers are equally committed to ensuring that those responsible for all illegally dumped waste are identified and prosecution of the offenders pursued wherever possible.
