Economic Development Strategy

Economic Development

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) sits at the inner edge of West London "wedge" which provides a combination of favourable economic opportunities.

What does the economic development team do?

The economic development team sits in the regeneration and housing strategy division. We foster economic growth and prosperity by assisting residents and businesses with practical responses to today’s economic challenges. Specifically we use our knowledge, influence and resources to:

  • Support local businesses and attract business investment
  • Assist residents to secure skills, qualifications, experience and jobs
  • Regenerate deprived areas of the borough

Our current priorities

Business investment

Our team focuses on the key theme ‘H&F – a better place to do business’, and particularly on:

  • Stimulating inward investment and strategies for competitive growth
  • Business relations and providing a voice for businesses at local, regional and national levels
  • Working with developers to sustain business growth and maximise employment/training benefits from developments
  • Levering in funding/investment for business support activities
  • Developing strategic partnerships, strengthening the involvement of businesses in the local community and promoting local corporate social responsibility

Developing our town centres and revitalising local business/shopping clusters

We are working hard to improve the health and vitality of our three town centres, Fulham, Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush.  We employ town centre managers, who develop in partnership with local businesses a distinct vision and business plan in Fulham and Shepherds Bush.

We also work closely with HammersmithLondon (Hammersmith’s business improvement district).

Our town centre plans include implementing security and safety, traffic and parking improvements, marketing campaigns, and cultural events.

Each town centre has its own website (click on the following for links);

Supporting our businesses

The business environment For the majority of businesses, the quality of the environment in which they operate is hugely important to them. Businesses demand a clean, safe, busy, marketable and fully-let trading environment in which they can trade successfully alongside other businesses that – along with themselves - enhance the trading environment and encourage investment both from within the borough and outside it.  Please contact the town centre managers, or the Business Improvement District who help businesses talk to council service providers regarding waste and graffitti. The council’s role in supporting business is to be a business-friendly council, ensuring that H&F remains a highly supportive environment in which to do business; to assist businesses in getting their voices heard; and to provide entrepreneurial residents of all ages in our disadvantaged communities’ clear routines to enterprise.

The council does not provide an advice service to businesses, instead relying on other services providers such as the London wide service provided by Business Link in London. Business Link in London is the gateway to all business support available across the capital, both public and private.  Much of their advice and support is free.

We have remodelled our business support service and now offer a Business Desk (see Business support and advice) which provides an information service on where to get business advice and support. This is aimed at local small and medium sized companies and start-up businesses.  We also signpost businesses to skills and employment support services  and like to assist businesses to recruite locally.

Helping our residents to win jobs

Our Work Matters strategy aims to meet more of borough-based employers’ workforce needs locally and tackle welfare benefits dependency and rising unemployment particularly in response to the current recession.

We offer practical support to deliver real results by helping residents to secure real jobs; take up pre-employment training or on-the-job training and skills development; and assisting employers to recruit and train.
