Apprenticeship
Introduction
Hammersmith & Fulham’s current apprenticeship programme is delivered in partnership with Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College (EHWLC) and is targeted specifically at borough residents. The pilot scheme was launched in September ’09 - offered 19 apprentices employment across various key council services, whilst they work towards a NVQ level 2 in Business Administration.
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and essential work based skills and experience. Offering apprenticeships to help young people to develop their skills in the work place and careers, is one of a number of practical ways in which the council is implementing its ‘work matters’ strategy.
We have worked hard to ensure that our pilot scheme gave young people, aged 16-25, who were not in employment, education or training (NEET), care leavers, lone parents or without qualifications, an opportunity to apply.
All apprentices have been given the chance to work in two workplace placements, a day release to college and a mentor from the local business sector.
In addition to gaining a full apprenticeship, the opportunity and additional support to gain further knowledge, skills and mentoring is also available:
- Drop-in services have been introduced at the Connexions One Stop Shop to provide additional help and assistance for apprentices’ looking for further opportunities or need support dealing with personal challenges
- Monthly ‘Personal Effectiveness’ sessions to support individuals and their separate needs e.g. confidence building, effective communications etc
- Intensive Pastoral Care/Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) scheduling 1-2-1 sessions to discuss individual needs
- Each apprentice is assigned a business mentor based within the H&F area and normally have meetings on a monthly basis (mentors employed by BBC, Coca Cola, Disney)
The apprenticeship pilot scheme is financially supported by H&F Borough Partnership (LSP) and Homeless Directorate Grant.
Take a look at the spring addition of the ‘You’re Hired Newsletter’ which keeps you up-to-date with the apprentices achievements.
