Council Tax - Ways to Pay

Whilst we offer 10 monthly instalments from April through to January (may vary for example if you move in during the year), you can opt to pay half yearly (in April and October) or yearly (in advance in April). If you pay by direct debit you are given 11 instalments.

Ways to pay that help to reduce costs
The council has to pay transaction fees and charges for receiving your payments. If these costs can be reduced the costs of collection are lowered and in turn this will help keep council tax levels down. Paying on time also helps keep costs down as we would spend less in printing costs and postage (reminders, final notices etc.). Listed below are the ways to pay in order of the cost to the council - with the least expensive first. You can help us by choosing the least expensive option that suits you (pay by direct debit if you can).

1. Direct debit (bank or building society accounts)
Over 35,000 of our customers already use this method. The latest technology, and guarantees from your bank, makes this the quickest, easiest and safest payment option. You can choose your payment date – the 1st, 8th, 15th, 21st or 28th of the month, which is later than any other way of paying. To set up your direct debit, just phone 020 8600 7777.
