The Local Housing Allowance
The new rent allowance scheme
Local Housing Allowance (LHA)
What is the LHA?
The Local Housing Allowance is a new way of calculating Housing Benefit for private tenants only, that will be introduced nationally from April 2008.
As with the existing Housing Benefit scheme, LHA is administered in order to help people pay their rent.
You will only get the LHA if:
- you rent from a private landlord, and
- you have a low income or are getting certain welfare benefits.
The LHA is intended to make Housing Benefit more simple and fair and give claimants personal responsibility for paying their rent.
