Housing benefit - Local housing allowance
What is local housing allowance (LHA)?
Local Housing Allowance was introduced in April 2008 as a new way of calculating housing benefit for private tenants.
As with the existing housing benefit scheme, LHA is administered in order to help people pay their rent.
You will only get LHA if:
- you rent from a private landlord, and
- you have a low income or are getting certain welfare benefits.
LHA is intended to make housing benefit more simple and fair and give claimants personal responsibility for paying their rent.
