Trading Standards

Trading Standards is part of the Public Protection and Safety Division. The service exists to ensure compliance with a wide range of UK and European legislation. It aims to ensure a fair and safe trading environment for consumers and honest businesses by:

  • Being accessible, responsive and innovative.
  • Dealing effectively and fairly with non-compliance.
  • Informing, educating, monitoring and advising; and
  • A commitment to service excellence.

The service recognises the central role that buying and selling goods and services takes in everyday life. Informed consumers benefit from making the right choices and informed businesses prosper, to the benefit of the local community. The service is committed to encouraging good practice and preventing non-compliance by offering advice and information to both consumers and business.

If you live or work in the borough and have bought faulty goods, received unsatisfactory service or are concerned about trading practices or promotions we can advise on your legal rights and how best to resolve your problem. We regret that we are not able to speak or write letters to the trader on your behalf.

If you do not live or work in the borough and are not complaining about a Hammersmith & Fulham based business, contact your local trading standards department or visit the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) website for the address of your local trading standards office. Much of the work of the team is determined by statute and the Divisional Enforcement Policy lays down how legislation is interpreted and enforced.

Buy With Confidence Scheme

The scheme was first launched in 1999 and the Buy with Confidence website now details hundreds of businesses in over 150 trade categories. It has proved so successful that all 19 Trading Standards Authorities in the South East have agreed that it’s an ideal way to combat the problem of rogue traders. East and West Sussex, Surrey, Southampton and the Isle of Wight have already adopted the scheme and now it has moved to the London area, where the London Boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham, Redbridge and Greenwich have now all joined, with other London Authorities set to follow in the next few months.

To get details of firms you can trust or to apply to be a member you can visit the interactive website at www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk or call 08454 04 05 06 and remember to look out for the Buy with Confidence logo below to identify scheme members.
