StreetSmart streetscape design guide

We are committed to improving the design of our streets and with this in mind we published the first part of our StreetSmart guide in December 2005. It is a manual for officers in the borough that shows them the methods and materials to use that will make our streets safer and more attractive.

The guide has the following advice about street furniture:

  • In general, it should be grouped together so that streets are not cluttered.
  • On pavements, it should be grouped in a line next to the kerb so a clear pathway is left for pedestrians.
  • Keep historic street furniture to help maintain the character of the borough.
