School supervised medication
The primary aim when educating pupils with medical needs is to minimise, as far as possible, the disruption this may cause to everyday schooling by continuing their education as normally as the incapacity allows.
Having positive policies on medication and supporting pupils medical needs will enable schools to achieve this aim and will help protect a pupil's heath and safety.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council believe that enabling children and young people to access education appropriate to their medical condition is important to their future mental and physical development. All schools are required to have policies on managing pupil’s medicines and on supporting pupils with medical needs.
Such policies are based upon best practice contained in the joint Department of Education and Skills and Department of Health, publication ‘Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years Settings’. This explains the roles and responsibilities of employers, parents and carers, governing bodies, head teachers, teachers and other staff and of local health services and may be downloaded from the following: http://publications.teachernet.gov.uk/eOrderingDownload/1448-2005DCL-ENv3final.pdf
