Music and audio visual collections
All libraries stock CDs, DVDs, talking books, language courses, videos and books on music. However, the largest collections are at the two main libraries, Hammersmith and Fulham, which also stock music scores.
CDs
All types of music are represented including rock, pop, rap, hip-hop, country, easy listening, jazz, folk, world music and classical. We offer a reservation service for items not on the shelves. Older material, even deleted recordings, may be obtainable through the inter-library loans network known as GLASS (Greater London Audio Specialisation Scheme). You may borrow up to six items for three weeks.
DVDs and videos
We have a wide range of titles at all our libraries. Our aim is to complement the commercial video shops by providing not only a good selection of the latest feature films but also a comprehensive collection of other types of material, including children’s titles, music and documentaries. Loan periods vary from three days to one week according to the type of video borrowed. Up to six videos/DVDs may be taken out at any one time.
Talking books
Every library has a selection of books on cassette, many in full length, unabridged versions. (Some libraries have talking books on compact disc as well.) Although originally targeted at visually impaired people, nowadays they are enjoyed by a much wider public which is reflected in the diversity and sheer volume of titles available. Whether it’s classic or contemporary fiction, humour or drama, poetry or autobiography, there is something to suit all tastes.
Language Courses
All libraries stock language courses. From beginners to advanced, there is a course to meet most people’s needs, ranging from one or two cassette packs for a holiday to four or more cassette packs for serious study. Almost all come with books. There is also material to help people improve their English. Shepherds Bush and Askew Road libraries have computers offering a wide range of interactive language courses.
