LSCB - Training programme
If you work with children, young people and families, you need to know about:
The London Safeguarding Children Procedures
In September 2007, the London Safeguarding Children Board published the new procedures, which can be downloaded from:
London Safeguarding Children Procedures (3mb pdf)
We are all obliged to apply these procedures when working with children, young people and families. The procedures are particularly relevant to officers working in children's and adult social care and health services, housing, education, youth and leisure services, the police, probation, prisons, courts and youth offending services, emergency services, Sure Start, Early Years, Connexions, voluntary, community and faith organisations.
The Hammersmith and Fulham LSCB held a number of information events to launch the Child Protection Procedures. In 2008-09, there will be more detailed training for staff who need to use the procedures as part of their day-to-day work, so watch out for more information on this website.
Update on LSCB Multi-Agency Training Programme:
The LSCB runs an annual multi-agency training programme, which includes a range of courses to enable professionals to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
Following a significant re-organisation of the council's Learning and Development services, the LSCB's role is changing from training provider to training commissioner. In practice, this means that, from 1st April 2008, LSCB members will play a greater role in scrutinising the commissioning of training, monitoring the quality of the training programme, identifying multi-agency training needs, and championing the take-up of multi-agency training by staff across the relevant disciplines and sectors.
A mini training needs analysis was conducted with a small sample of LSCB member agencies during November and December 2007. Some of the key needs and preferences identified included:
- greater flexibility in training method, timing and venue, responding to the difficulties of making staff available to attend whole-day training
- short training modules, allowing staff to 'pick and mix'
- regular information briefings and updates
- a focus on multi-disciplinary and mult-agency approaches to ensure that staff gain a better understanding of each others' working practices, to promote inter-agency communication and to dispel agency myths
- targeted marketing of training
- more domestic violence training for all staff across sectors and disciplines
The LSCB is currently negotiating a service level agreement with the Learning and Development team, which will take the lead in either providing training or identifying external training resources in line with the multi-agency needs identified.
We aim to finalise the training programme for at least the first six months of the year (April - September 2008) shortly and details will be posted here shortly, so please watch this space.
The LSCB is also developing a new Professional Development Quality Assurance Subgroup to oversee the process of commissioning, scrutinise the service level agreement, monitor the delivery and quality of the training programme, and ensure that future commissioning reflects multi-agency training needs. If you would be interested in being part of this subgroup, which will meet quarterly and report to the LSCB Operational Board, please contact Jill Downey, LSCB Commissioning Officer, on 020 8753 3358 or at jill.downey@lbhf.gov.uk
