Dry cleaning - Local authority pollution prevention control permit application

From 31 October 2007 all dry cleaning establishments will require a permit to continue to operate.  As an operator, you are required to submit an application for a permit.  The deadline for receipt of completed applications was the 31st October 2006.

The duty for councils to authorise and inspect dry cleaning establishments is given by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) under its implementation of the European Union Solvent Emissions Directive.

Successful applicants for permits will be required to record solvent losses and ensure equipment is maintained.  Further information is provided in DEFRA’s Process Guidance Note.

Copies of this guidance - including versions in Greek, Gujarati, Turkish and Urdu - may be downloaded from DEFRA’s website using the web address given below.  Alternatively you may request printed copies directly from the council.

Please note DEFRA will fine operators failing to submit a fully completed application by the deadline.
