Curriculum

The national curriculum applies to all children aged between five and 16. It provides a structured and assessed education for most subjects taught in schools. It is divided into the following key stages

key stage 1 (ages 5-7)
key stage 2 (ages 7-11)
key stage 3 (ages 11-14)
key stage 4 (ages 14-16)

Foundation stage assessments
The foundation stage profile sets out a way of summarising young children's achievements at the end of the foundation stage of the national curriculum (age six) and provides important information for parents and year one teachers. For more details see foundation stage.

National curriculum tests
The Government has set tests for all seven, 11 and 14 year olds, which are taken in May. The results of these tests help schools work out how well your child is doing. Seven-year-olds are tested in English and maths. Eleven-year-olds are tested in English, maths and science. Children are given an assessment by their teacher in addition to the tests. The tests only cover what the children have been learning at school. The school will send you a report telling you what levels your child has reached in the tests and teacher assessments. You can find out more information about the tests and national curriculum at www.dfes.gov.uk/parents
